Perfect integration case
NorthStar Medical Radioisotopes, Inc., headquartered in Beloit, Wisconsin, was founded in 2006 to serve the U.S. nuclear medicine market. It is a wholly owned subsidiary of NorthStar Medical Technologies.
RayHeasty, mechanical engineer at NorthStar, said: "This unique packaging design stems from NorthStar's desire to integrate several key components into one module, and Barger's ability to turn the concept into reality. The reagent package developed is easy to store, install, handle after use, and perform content inspection, providing tangible benefits to users of NorthStar's RadioGenix™System."
The smart packaging holds and protects the product during transportation, handling, and use, and is designed with a variety of easy-to-use features, including a 360° orifice at the bottom of the unit. As integrated components of the NorthStarMedical Radioisotopes generation process, technetium-99m packaging is used with products to form key commonly used isotopes for medical diagnosis and imaging. After use, there are three liquid reagent bags (one is corrosive), hoses and joints are handled together with the packaging containing the waste product to ensure its function, ease of use and handling.
Barger product designer MikeMotl said that for medical device packaging, the company's design is end-user-centered when meeting the needs of the project. Motl said: "Support customers throughout the design cycle, from concept proposal, manufacturing samples, tooling manufacturing, technical specification development to product development. Team members are involved very early in the design cycle, aligning customer expectations with manufacturing capabilities and end-user requirements. This planning facilitates the introduction of unique features, such as the finishing device used in NorthStar packaging. Our design approach enables innovation in the design cycle at any stage of the collaborative process."
Heasty continues; "Barger has cooperated well from the very beginning. The Barger team listened to our questions and the goals we set for the project."
