Plastic packaging for frozen foods typically includes bags, containers, trays and stretch wrap. The materials of bags vary from single PE and PP films to multi-layer materials such as PE, PP, PET or nylon. Coating PVDC on films like PP or PET can enhance the barrier performance for high-fat foods. Boil-in-bag, where the product is packaged in a bag and cooked inside before opening, makes it very convenient to process foods that produce strong odors during cooking.
Materials such as HDPE and PP that can be used for water-cooked bag packaging can provide a reasonable shelf life, although the packaging material has considerable permeability to gases. Laminated materials are used to extend the shelf life. More expensive materials include PP/PE, PET/PE, PET/PA/PP, and PPPE or PET/PE laminated versions coated with PVDC. HIPS materials are used for frozen dessert containers, while EPS trays, wrapped with PVC or PE, look whiter and cleaner and are alternatives to paper-molded products.
It can be seen that there are many types of packaging for frozen foods. However, the selection of packaging types and materials must be made carefully, taking into account cost, storage performance, and the nature of frozen products.
