When McKeon Products chose to launch its new Lunaguard night tooth protector in spring 2015, it wanted to do it in style. McKeon is considering using a package that reflects Lunaguard's uniqueness and high quality in the oral care section of pharmacies and at high-volume retailers. TransparentContainer designs products that address this need well.
Lunaguard is designed to protect consumers' teeth by preventing tooth grinding during sleep. The material used has extremely high strength, which can prevent consumers from biting through, but only 16mm thick, with better comfort. The sheath is free of bisphenol A, polyvinyl chloride and latex, and is perforated to better bend and absorb the intense pressure of grinding teeth.
It is up to the consumer to shape the sheath to suit the individual tooth type, by placing it in hot water until it softens and becomes transparent, and then gently biting it down to form a comfortable shape. If the bite is not quite right, or becomes uncomfortable over time, the molding process can be repeated up to 20 times.
Design and manufacture the perfect packaging
Fischer Design, the McKeon Company's design firm, has designed a package that prominently displays the jacket, where consumers can clearly see its distinctive slender shape, and the packaging is tall and colorful, attracting attention that will dwarf other competing products.
"We came to Transparent Container with the look, the size of the package, and the presentation of the jacket. Their task is to engineer the packaging, design the mold and production process, and turn the packaging design into a product." Introduction by the president of McKeon Corporation.
Wrap the coat with 0.012 "(0.3mm) thick PVC. The original design called for the cladding to be decorated in bright colors. Color foil stamping is a common method for decoration, but in addition to the high cost, the use of color foil may interfere with the RF cutting of the finished sleeve from the printed sheet.
Transparent Container's alternative is to apply a UV metallic silver coating using a mesh roll coating machine. This can form a brighter metallic appearance than UV ink or metallic aniline ink, and then the coating is overprinted with transparent color ink, which is formed by blue and silver ink to form the appearance of metallic ink, so that the packaging has a bright metal element.
Solve various problems encountered
The outer layer and bottom plate are made by injection molding, and the clamps holding the jacket and bottom plate are also made by injection molding. The flap package containing the protective box is 0.020 "(0.5mm)PVC. Getting these parts into final packaging, reaching market targets, and economically assembling and shipping them requires a lot of repeated development work, including sketches, computer drawings, and manufacturing models.
For example, one challenge was to stabilize the clamps holding the sheathing in place. Initially, it is set on the top of the clamshell package, but the antibacterial protection storage box should be placed inside the clamshell, and it cannot be used as a stable bottom plate. Transparent Container has added an injection-molded stand that mounts on the flap package and holds the clamps level through it. This keeps the sheath stable in the viewing window when the consumer picks up the package.
The second challenge encountered was keeping the sheath in the clamshell packaging and clamps stable in the coat layer. The solution is to add a small U-shaped piece on each side of the bottom of the coat. These clamps fold upward in the coat layer to trap the lifted pieces on each side of the clamshell package, keeping the packaged product stable during transportation and storage handling
Printing on the coat layer, including roller coating requires two steps: the first step is to print opaque white ink twice, and then apply UV roller coating: the second step is to print opaque white ink three times using an 8-color press, and print surface images in 4 colors. The metallic blue and silver information sections are then formed by PMS300 blue and a partial UV transparent gloss flexible coating.
Final packaging
The mouth guard is prominently displayed in a beautiful, striking PVC jacket printed in a bright metallic color that is clearly visible to the consumer. In addition to the sheath, the jacket contains a clamshell insert that holds the sheath antibacterial protection storage box, and an information insert that explains how to use the molding and care for the sheath.
Lunaguard is relatively expensive, but it is a great value. Packaging must reflect this value through its own quality and make the product clearly visible. With the help of TransparentContainer, we did just that.
