Mercury Company aims to offer existing owners after-market enclosures specifically designed for 5-blade and 6-blade propellers, and to present this enclosure as a value-added product for new buyers. This enclosure not only needs to perfectly match the propellers but also must be durable and be part of the long-term storage solution for high-end racing boat equipment. The double-wall composite material thermoformed enclosure meets the durability and multi-functionality requirements of Mercury's products.
Durability and aesthetics are both required.
Mercury Racing understands the investment their customers make in marine propellers, so the new housing they developed for their CNC Cleaver propellers must not only provide protection but also have an attractive appearance.
Customized thermoforming collaboration
Mercury Racing manufactures and sells marine racing propellers and has been in the marine racing industry since the 1970s. They asked Allied Plastics to develop custom thermoformed housings for their 5-blade and 6-blade CNC Cleaver propellers, which are designed for stern drive applications. These high-end, precision props with a good luster are designed for discerning racing enthusiasts.
Mercury wanted to offer aftermarket housings specifically for 5-blade and 6-blade propellers to existing owners and make the housing an added value for new buyers. The housing must not only fit the propellers perfectly (to prevent shifting during transportation) but also be durable and part of the long-term storage solution for high-end racing equipment. The previous housings simply couldn't provide the protection these propellers needed.
Working with Mercury's internal design team, Allied Plastics designed a brand-new plastic thermoformed housing.
Solution
By considering the shape and structure of the propeller, Allied Plastics proposed a concept based on past enclosures and Mercury's ideas. The CNC Cleavers are very aesthetically pleasing and cannot use ordinary enclosures, so Allied Plastics attempted to adopt a military appearance and feel. The designers at Allied Plastics realized that a double-wall composite material thermoformed enclosure could achieve the durability and versatility required for Mercury products.
The nylon tenon and mortise structure is a key component that is fixed through the interlocking action between the upper and lower parts of the enclosure. High-density foam lining can protect the propeller from any impact from the upper part of the enclosure while maintaining a seal. With four steel clasps and a rear pull handle, the enclosure can remain stable no matter how difficult the journey is over thousands of miles.
Strict actual navigation tests
All of this sounds ideal, but it was only after completing specific shipping tests (including some actual jolts) that it was discovered to be a good idea. After strict testing, the thermoformed plastic propeller housing passed the test in beautiful colors, and Allied Plastics was colored according to specially designed channels and ribs, which not only caught the eye but also provided additional durability and other aesthetic features.
Thermally formed plastic propeller casing
Most importantly, Allied Plastics is able to achieve thermally formed plastic at a lower cost than its competitors and previous casings.
