     At NPE2018, Battenfeld Cincinnati USA will showcase their proven STARextruder series. This system concept has been specifically optimized for processing PET and recently received an FDA no-objection letter for the production of food-grade thermoformed sheet.
    Some food packaging, such as thin-walled, resealable plastic containers or trays for convenience foods, are becoming increasingly important. Besides polypropylene, PET is also frequently used in these applications due to its high transparency and good mechanical properties, making it particularly suitable for these products. Processing PET can be challenging as it is prone to degradation when combined with water during processing. Therefore, effective degassing of the extruder is essential to achieve good product quality.
    The STARextruder series is primarily designed for PET extrusion. The processing unit consists of three parts: a single-screw area for plasticizing the material, a planetary screw section for degassing under high vacuum, and an optimized discharge zone. Thanks to the planetary screw degassing section, the melt can be degassed. Due to the function of the degassing section, the melt spreads into very thin layers, creating a large surface area. Both effects prevent material degradation and significantly improve product quality.
    The STARextruder saves energy by significantly reducing drying costs. The design principle adopted by the machine offers various benefits to operators. Since the STARextruder is based on a standard single-screw extruder, the processing procedure is similar. The planetary screw section has high wear resistance, resulting in lower maintenance costs. The machine can be switched from processing PET to PP or PS without the need to replace the screw. The machine uses a proven concept and can process pre-treated PET bottle flakes. Recently, the FDA (Food and Drug Administration of the United States) issued a no-objection letter for this process.
    The machine specifications of the STARextruders are 90, 120, and 150mm, making them ideal for medium and small production ranges of 600-1200kg/h.
