Global Plastics Inc. located in Perris, California, won the top prize in the food category of the 2018 SPE Thermoforming Competition with an egg carton formed from 100% recycled PET. One unique feature is that the label is designed inside the container and completed at the farm, so shoppers no longer need to open it to check if the eggs are damaged.
Innovative egg packaging
This 100% recyclable PET egg packaging is an innovative container that will revolutionize the egg packaging industry as it was created with the help of farmers to achieve the best efficiency in high-speed automation. This container can hold four different sizes of eggs and features a unique design that helps ensure the comfort of the eggs during transportation. This will be the primary packaging for egg producers in the future, not only because of operational efficiency or environmental benefits, but also due to its competitive price.
Features and Advantages
The flip-top, hook-lock packaging is made from 18mm x 29.5mm 100% recycled PET sheet rolls, offering egg producers an environmentally friendly and economically viable plastic option. The set includes 12, 18 and 24-piece packages, as well as a bulk 60-piece package for club stores.
This packaging is currently available in transparent PET and green PET, and an amber version will soon be launched. The innovative final design took nearly five years to create as the product was constantly evolving to ensure it fully met the needs of egg producers, stores, and consumers. One of the most unique aspects of the container is that it is designed to have labels marked inside the packaging, completed within the farm. This is crucial because it allows egg producers to use the same packaging for all their customers and reduces inventory costs by millions of dollars.
Unlike pulp or styrofoam packaging that requires printing on labels, this packaging enables egg producers to simply change the labels to meet the customized needs of their customers without causing a large amount of inventory waste due to changes in customer designs. The design of the packaging also ensures that the eggs are fixed during transportation, significantly reducing the breakage rate that egg producers are accustomed to with pulp and cardboard packaging. Using semi-transparent PET, in-store breakage is greatly reduced as customers no longer need to open the packaging and feel the eggs. Just a simple glance at the entire package can confirm that there are no broken eggs.
